I cannot find Accordion in the module picker

Check whether it is already in the current layout. Use that slot, or remove it in layout mode before adding it elsewhere.

Accordion says Open a comp or No comp

Open or activate a composition in After Effects. No active composition means the current item is not a composition. Selecting footage in the Project panel is not enough.

With an open comp and no groups, the prompt is Select layers, then Group, shortened to Group layers in a compact list.

Group says No selection or Locked

No selection is the brief badge for Select layers to group. Select layers in the active composition’s timeline and click Group again.

Locked means every selected layer was locked. You may see Skipped N locked layers. Unlock at least one layer you want grouped. With a mixed selection, Accordion groups the unlocked layers and reports the skipped count.

Existing groups can still fold, recolor, move, duplicate, and apply group switches to locked members. Those operations temporarily unlock layers as needed and restore their locks. Dissolve can delete locked members.

Fold or Unfold affects more groups than I expected

The toolbar uses selection-based scope. If no selected timeline layer identifies a group, it affects every group. Alt always forces all groups. To affect one group directly, click its row.

No groups accompanies No groups in this comp. Create a group in the active composition first. All folded or All open means no change was needed.

A layer stays hidden after I unfold

Unfold restores the layer’s previous shy switch. A layer that was shy beforehand stays shy. Turn off After Effects’ Hide Shy Layers switch temporarily to find it, then adjust its shy switch if needed.

A nested group can also remain folded, or its parent may still be folded. Open the parent, then the child. Folding leaves Hide Shy Layers on, so previously shy layers elsewhere in the composition can disappear too.

Folding no longer hides the timeline rows

Check After Effects’ Hide Shy Layers switch. Folding turns it on, but you can turn it off manually. Turn it on again to hide shy rows. Changing shy switches directly while a group is folded can conflict with the values Accordion will restore.

The row says moved

Stored members no longer form the block directly under their header. Choose Regather layers or Update group. Accordion detects displacement, but does not automatically move layers back.

A group is missing or the list is out of date

Return focus to Accordion or move the pointer back into it to refresh. Gone accompanies That group is gone. Refresh Accordion. when an action targets a deleted group.

Headers store the group data in their comments. Deleting a header, replacing its comment, or duplicating a header manually can stop it from being recognized. Use After Effects Undo to restore an accidental edit. Use Accordion’s Duplicate command when copying complete groups. A header’s displayed name is managed by Accordion; rename through its panel.

Accordion asks me to Update AE

Accordion needs After Effects 2022 or later means the installed version lacks the layer IDs Accordion uses. Update After Effects to use groups.

Group matte needs After Effects 2023 or later applies specifically to group mattes. Other group actions work in After Effects 2022.

I cannot choose a layer as the group matte

The menu offers up to 40 direct members and excludes Group FX. For nested layers, open the inner group’s matte menu. Pick a layer from this group means the chosen layer is no longer an eligible direct member. Refresh and choose again.

Moving the header does not move every layer

Enable Parent to header. Existing parents are kept, so some layers may follow another controller. Nested contents need their own parenting relationship to the inner header.

Group FX affects artwork outside the group

This is expected for an After Effects adjustment layer. ↓ affects below and ↓ FX warn that layers below the group are affected too. See Group FX for its scope and removal behavior.

Ungroup leaves layers hidden, soloed, or locked

Ungroup and Strip restore saved shy switches, but leave current solo, visibility, and lock switches. Turn the group overrides off before removing headers if you want their remembered values restored. The removal guide also covers retained mattes and adjustment layers.

A menu action seems to do nothing

Dissolve and Strip all groups require a hold of about 0.7 seconds. Alt-click bypasses the hold. At the edge accompanies Already at the top or Already at the bottom when movement has reached its limit.

Not done is a general refusal badge. Follow the accompanying message. Give the group a name asks for nonempty text; blank names entered through the normal rename field are simply ignored.

If a host call fails, its error appears in the panel or a toast. This can include Failed to parse result, an action name followed by returned nothing or failed, or Accordion could not finish when no more specific message is available. Activate the intended comp and retry. If it persists, keep the exact message for support.
