Enter Edit layout in Motion Dock, select Copycat, and click Module settings in the top bar. You can also double-click its slot in layout mode or right-click it and choose Module settings.
Settings save as you change them and apply across projects.
The naming and folder settings apply to the next copy. Depth sets where the chip starts each session. Use the chip or right-click Copy for a temporary depth choice.
Settings inventory
| Setting | Default | Behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Copy Name | {name} copy | Replaces {name} with the original comp’s name. Existing project item names cause a numbered suffix, beginning at 2. |
| Rename Children Too | On | Applies Copy Name to copied nested comps too. Off preserves their original names. The top comp always uses the pattern. |
| Copies Go To | A ”<comp> copies” folder | Groups a source’s copied tree in a folder named after the original top comp. Choose The original’s folder to keep each copied comp in its own original’s folder. |
| Depth | All nested comps | Starts sessions with All. The other saved option is 1 level (nested stay shared). Pick is chosen from the main tool. |
Copy names
Keep {name} in the pattern to include the source comp's name.
For a comp named Title, the default pattern makes Title copy. Copy the same original again to get Title copy 2, then Title copy 3, as long as those names are available. Copying Title copy instead uses that new source name and makes Title copy copy.
You can put {name} anywhere, such as Version B - {name}. If you enter only v2, Copycat treats it as {name} v2. A blank pattern uses {name} copy. The pattern is trimmed and limited to 120 characters before names are generated. {name} is the supported placeholder.
Name collisions are checked against all project item names, not just the destination folder. With Rename Children Too off, nested copies intentionally keep duplicate names. See the expression limits before relying on comp names in expressions.
Destination folders
With A ”<comp> copies” folder, a source named Title inside Scenes puts its copied tree in Scenes/Title copies. Copycat reuses a folder with that exact name inside Scenes if one already exists. Each selected top comp uses its own destination folder.
With The original’s folder, each copied comp goes beside its own original. If a nested source was in another folder, its copy stays in that other folder rather than moving beside the top comp. Existing sources are not moved by either option.
Changing Depth also updates the current chip unless you are working in Pick. To leave Pick, use the right-click depth menu.
