Motion Dock checks for updates when it opens. When a newer version is available, an Update available notice shows its version and an Install now button.
Install in place
- Click Install now.
- Wait while the notice shows Downloading update, Verifying files and Installing update.
- The notice changes to Reloading all open panels. Let the panels reload.
You do not need to remove and reinstall the dock for a normal in-place update. Your layouts and preferences live in the dock’s saved data, outside the installed extension files.
If the notice asks you to reopen After Effects
Some updates need the host to restart. If you see Reopen your Adobe app, save your work, quit After Effects and open it again. Got it dismisses the notice; it does not restart After Effects for you.

In layout mode, tools changed by a waiting update have an update mark. Click one to bring back the update notice. After updating, changed tools have a New in mark with the installed version. Those marks clear after you leave layout mode once.
The dock updates its tools together. You do not need to install a separate update for each tool you have added to a layout.
If installation fails
An Update failed notice shows the error and a Download button. Use it to open the dock’s download page, then follow the ZXP installation steps. A notice with Download instead of Install now also uses the manual installer path.
If another panel is already installing an update, let it finish before trying again. Updates require an internet connection.
