Add Fits to Motion Dock

  1. Click Edit layout in Motion Dock’s top bar.
  2. Click an empty area and choose Fits from the module picker.
  3. Click Exit layout mode.

If Fits is already in this layout, use its existing slot. Give it enough room to show Variants and the frame picker. In a compact slot, the ellipsis opens these controls.

Make a vertical version

  1. Open a wide comp in After Effects. For a predictable result, use a 1920×1080 comp named Launch with visible artwork in the center.
  2. In Fits, open Variants. Check that the source name is Launch.
  3. Cmd-click 9:16 on Mac, or Ctrl-click it on Windows. This picks only that frame.
  4. Click the first mode icon. Its tooltip begins Smart · Fill.
  5. Click Make 1 variant.

In the Project panel, open Launch variants, beside the original comp. It should contain a new 1080×1920 comp named Launch 9x16. Open it to see your source centered and scaled to fill the vertical frame. A success message confirms the number made.

The result has one content layer whose source is Launch. Its scale is about 177.78%, so the left and right parts of the wide source fall outside the vertical frame. The original comp is unchanged.

For a vertical result that keeps the entire wide image visible, choose Fit before making it. That version uses 56.25% scale and leaves space above and below the image. Choose how content fits covers the other modes.

Use Edit > Undo in After Effects to remove everything created by the Make action, including a new variants folder. If you see Select a comp to make variants of, reopen the source comp and try again.
