Fits says Select a comp
Fits has no usable composition. Open a comp or select comps in the Project panel, then move the pointer back into Fits to refresh its context.
Make can show Select a comp to make variants of; Apply can show Select the comps to change. Swap can show Select a comp first. Wider buttons may also show a No comp badge. Selecting timeline layers alone does not choose a different source comp.
Fits is using the wrong comp
For Make and Apply, two or more Project panel comps take priority. Otherwise the active comp takes priority over a single Project panel selection. Open the intended comp or select the whole batch, then check Fits’ context and comp list.
Swap uses the active comp first, regardless of a multiple selection. With no active comp, it uses the first selected comp.
Make says Pick at least one frame
All frames are unpicked. Click a frame, or Cmd-click on Mac or Ctrl-click on Windows to pick only that frame. The button may show Pick a frame as a short badge. Source comps and output frames are separate selections.
The new comp crops my artwork
Fill covers the target frame and can hide content outside its edges. Use Fit to keep the whole source visible. Crop keeps layer scale and centers the content, so a smaller frame can crop it too.
A per-frame override can differ from the main mode. Choose Fill or Fit again to reset overrides, then check the preview. See Choose how content fits.
Re-layout did not produce a finished design
Re-layout applies position offsets by thirds. It does not scale artwork, resize text boxes, or build a responsive rig. Only the outer comp changes size; copied nested comps keep their dimensions. Review and adjust the new layout, especially rotated layers, 3D content, and expression-driven positions.
The thumbnail uses a source snapshot or placeholder. It does not preview the separate layer moves.
Some layers stayed in place
Locked layers are skipped by default when Re-layout, Crop, or Swap would move them. The success message reports locked layers kept in place. Unlock them or enable Move Locked Layers in module settings.
Parented layers follow their parent instead of getting a second offset. Batch Width and Height never reposition layers. Use the appropriate variant mode when you want content moved into a new frame.
The preview is generic or looks out of date
Fits can show placeholder artwork while no snapshot is available. Making variants does not depend on the preview image.
The snapshot is from the first source comp at its current time. Fits refreshes context when you return focus to the panel or move into it. Changes to artwork at the same comp, time, and dimensions may leave the cached image unchanged. Move the playhead to another frame and return to Fits to request a new image.
Apply shows Check fields
At least one entry is invalid. Correct or clear the outlined field using the accepted values. Press Escape in that field to clear it. Enter only finishes editing; use Apply to make the change.
Invalid custom dimensions instead nudge the custom popup. Both sides must be between 4 and 30000 pixels.
Apply says Fill in a setting to change
All fields and chips are unchanged. Enter a value or cycle Resolution or Keep fps to a setting. Nested alone does not specify a change. A wide button may show Nothing set.
Apply reports zero changed comps
The comps already match the entered values, or a duration timecode resolves to zero. Check the before-and-after list. Clear the form with the eraser if you want to start a different batch.
If a host error appears instead, check whether After Effects accepts the requested value. Fits’ text validation does not cover every host constraint. Inspect the affected comps and use Undo to reverse any part of the action that was applied before the error.
My nested comp changed elsewhere too
Nested edits existing precomps, including shared sources. Every comp using one sees its new settings. Undo the Apply action, turn Nested off, and apply again if only the root comps should change.
The safe zone is missing or uses different margins
Safe Zone Guide starts off. Turn it on before making a new variant. Existing variants are not updated, and Swap or Apply does not add guides.
Only frames with height/width at least 1.5 get platform UI margins. A 4:5 frame gets title and action safe. The layer is named Fits safe zone and is locked. Check its visibility in the timeline; it is excluded from normal renders because it is a guide layer.
A small frame button made a comp immediately
Compact slots use one-click smart variants. Open the ellipsis for the full frame picker, modes, and Settings tab. The slot reference shows both layouts.
My preset disappeared or the default list came back
Fits skips invalid entries in Frames and falls back to the defaults if the list has no valid entries. Use distinct labels and valid dimensions. The Frames format lists the rules.
My custom size made the old size instead
Adding a new size whose automatic label matches an existing preset can leave the old tile picked. This can happen with two 9:16 sizes. Check each tile’s pixel dimensions, pick the new tile explicitly, and make the variant again. Give the presets distinct labels in Frames to make them easier to tell apart.
The result contains extra comps or numbered names
Re-layout copies the nested comp tree as well as the outer comp. Those extra comps let the new layout stay independent of the original. Fill, Fit, and Crop keep their source precomps shared instead.
Every Make action creates fresh variants. When a name is already taken anywhere in the project, Fits adds a number. Open the configured output folder to find the latest result.
