Add Renamer to Motion Dock

  1. Click Edit layout in Motion Dock’s top bar.
  2. Click an empty area of the layout and choose Renamer from the module picker.
  3. Click Exit layout mode to use the tool.

If Renamer is already in this layout, use its existing slot. Give it enough width to show the original and proposed names side by side.

Number three layers

  1. Open a composition with three practice layers. Select all three and leave them unlocked.
  2. Move the pointer into Renamer. Check that the target chip shows 3 layers.
  3. Replace the pattern with Shot {#}.
  4. Open the arrow beside {#}. Set Start to 1, Step to 1, and Pad to 2. Close the popover by clicking the arrow again.
  5. Check the preview, then click Apply.

The top selected layer becomes Shot 01, the next becomes Shot 02, and the last becomes Shot 03. Unselected layers keep their names.

After applying, the preview settles on the new names. The button briefly reports how many layers were renamed.

If the target chip shows items, select the layers again. If both selections exist, click the chip to switch to layers. Select layers or project items means Renamer has no targets. Locked layers are skipped, so unlock your practice layers if you need all three numbers.

Use Edit > Undo in After Effects to restore the original names in one step. Return the pointer to Renamer to refresh its preview.
