Options

Click Options, the sliders button, to open these switches. In a small slot, open the ellipsis first.

SettingDefaultBehavior
Trim spacesOnCollapses repeated ordinary spaces and removes whitespace at the edges of the new name. Line breaks and tabs become spaces even when this is off.
Also rename sourcesOffFor selected precomp and footage layers, renames the source Project panel item to the proposed layer name. Has no effect while targeting Project panel items.

Rename layer sources

Enable Also rename sources when the Project panel item should share the layer's new name. The preview adds src when a source name needs to change.

The source can change even if the layer already has the proposed name. Solids and other layer types do not rename their sources.

A source item is shared wherever it is used in the project. Renamer changes that one item’s name, without duplicating it or renaming its file on disk. Other layers’ explicit names are not batch renamed by this switch.

If selected layers share a source, that source is processed only once. The first unlocked layer that needs a layer or source rename, in timeline order, supplies its new name. Alt changes counter assignment, but leaves this processing order unchanged. Several src tags can therefore refer to one source, and that source cannot take every proposed layer name. Rename shared sources separately if each source needs a deliberate name.

Locked layers and their sources are skipped. Use After Effects’ undo to reverse the layer and source names together.

Numbering

Open the arrow beside {#} to edit these values. They also appear in module settings with the labels shown in the second column.

ControlModule settingDefaultAllowed values
StartNumber from1Integers from -9999 to 99999.
StepNumber step1Integers from -100 to 100. A negative step counts down; zero repeats a value.
PadZero paddingAutoAuto, 1, 2, 3, or 4.

Decimal inputs are truncated to integers and values outside the range are clamped. Auto uses enough digits for the largest absolute counter value in the unlocked selection. For 1 through 12, it produces 01 through 12.

An explicit padding width is a minimum, so 2 produces 01, but keeps 100 as 100. Negative numbers keep the sign outside the padding, such as -01. Each {#} in a target’s pattern gets the same number.

What Renamer remembers

Options, numbering, and the recent recipe list are saved. The current pattern, find and replace fields, case mode, and view start fresh when the tool is mounted again. Use Recent patterns to restore an applied recipe.
