Keep the useful part
Start with {name} to keep each target’s name. Add text around it for a prefix or suffix. UI_{name}_final turns Button into UI_Button_final.
Click a token to insert it at the caret, or replace selected text in the pattern. You can also type tokens yourself. The token reference explains the values available for layers and project items.
To replace the whole name, remove {name}. Shot {#} ignores the old names. Plain Shot gives every unlocked target the same name, which the preview marks with !. Add {#} if each needs a distinct name.
Choose the numbering
Insert {#}, then click its arrow to open Numbering. Choose the first value, how much it changes per target, and the minimum number of digits.
For 010, 020, 030, use Start 10, Step 10, and Pad 3. The sample updates as you edit.
By default, numbers follow the selected layers from top to bottom in the timeline. Hold Alt to preview numbers in selection order, then Alt-click Apply to use that order. The preview rows stay in timeline order so you can compare them with the composition.
Locked layers do not consume a number. Unlocked layers still consume a number even when their proposed name happens to match the current name. For Project panel items, both orders use the selection order supplied by After Effects.
Numbering starts again for each application. To continue a previous batch, change Start. The settings reference lists the limits and padding rules.
Change case without changing your prefix
Click Case to cycle through Title, lower, UPPER, and back to Case. Hold Shift while clicking to cycle backward.
Case changes apply to text tokens. With UPPER, Shot {name} turns intro into Shot INTRO. The typed word Shot keeps its case. With {type} {name}, a text layer named hello becomes TEXT HELLO.
Title lowercases the token text, then capitalizes letters at the start or after a space, underscore, hyphen, or period. It preserves those separators.
Reuse a recipe
Open Recent patterns and click an entry to restore it. Renamer keeps up to eight distinct recipes from successful applications, with the newest first. The menu says Patterns you apply land here until you have one.
A recipe restores the pattern, find and replace text, regex and case matching switches, and case mode. Numbering and Options keep their current settings. Review the preview before applying a restored recipe.
