No active composition
Open a composition in After Effects and make it active. Selecting footage or a composition only in the Project panel does not provide an active composition for Snippy.
Select layers, or Alt-click for every unlocked layer
Select layers in the active composition, or leave everything deselected and Alt-click the action. Alt-click keeps an existing selection as the target. See which layers change.
Selected layers are locked
Unlock the layers you want to trim. A selection containing only locked layers cannot run a layer action. A mixed selection changes its unlocked layers and reports the locked ones.
The same message can appear when you Alt-click with nothing selected and every layer is locked. Fit comp has its own whole-comp rules.
No keyframes on these layers
Add keyframes or select layers that have them. Time Remap keys and layer markers do not count for To keys. Use Markers for marker timing.
No layer or comp markers
Add layer markers, add comp markers, or select layers that have markers. A single point marker changes only the in point, so it may leave the layer’s duration longer than expected.
No text layers selected
Select text layers for Read time. Text inside a selected precomp is not a text layer in the active composition. Open that precomp to time its text.
Nothing to trim here
Snippy could not form a valid span for any target. Check that the proposed out point is at least one frame after the in point, that marker padding has not inverted a range, and that the source covers the requested time.
An Outside badge accompanies playhead range refusals. Moving the playhead to a valid boundary or using the other playhead action can resolve it.
The layer stops short of the requested time
Trim boundaries snap to composition frames. Forward-playing video and precomp layers without Time Remap are also limited to their source window. This can shorten a requested range or make it invalid.
If Extend reports held by source (Alt remaps), use its Alt modifier when you want remapping. Snippy’s source-window check applies to positive time stretch. Reverse-stretched layers do not use that check.
Already snug or already fit
The requested timing already matches. These messages describe unchanged layers. They are not errors. A result can change some layers and count others as already fit.
The comp has no layers
Fit comp needs at least one layer to calculate a duration. Add a layer before fitting.
Fit comp stays long or moves locked layers
It includes every layer, even locked, disabled, and guide layers. Check for a full-length background or guide if the duration seems wrong. The Fit comp guide explains how it moves layers and preserves timecode.
Content at 0 still shows a nonzero timecode
The zero is relative comp time. With Fit comp moves content to 0 on, Snippy keeps the existing display start time. A comp whose displayed start is already nonzero keeps that value.
The preview does not match my layers
Without selected, unlocked layers, the bar is a sample. With a selection, it shows the outer range of up to 200 layers, not individual layer spans. Move the pointer out and back into Snippy after changing the selection or timing to refresh it.
Read time puts text beyond the comp end
Read time sets layer timing without resizing the composition. Review the result, then use Fit comp if you want the comp to cover all its layers. The reading guide explains sequencing and word counts.
Snippy reports another error
If a button shows Not done, read the accompanying error message. Snippy could not finish is the fallback when no specific message is available. Return to the active composition, check the targets, and try again. Use After Effects’ Undo if you need to restore an action’s changes.
