Choose Roll
- Set From, To, formatting, and ease.
- Open ⋯, then choose Roll under Look. This also selects plain number style.
- Click Create roll or Apply roll.
You can also Alt-click the main action to build rolling digits. Shift+Alt-click creates a new rolling counter while another layer is selected.
The result is an Odo Roll precomp layer in the active comp. Each digit is a text layer inside it. Digits move vertically; prefixes, suffixes, and punctuation stay in place. The outer layer has an Odo · Roll effect with Value and Multiplier, so you can retime the count without rebuilding it.
Keep the format editable through Odo
Roll supports plain numbers with grouping, decimal places, custom text, signs, and leading zeros. Compact and time styles switch Look back to Switch. If Alt-click requests Roll while a time or compact style is still selected, Odo refuses with Numbers only. Choose 123 first.
To reformat a roll, select its outer layer and use Odo. Each update rebuilds the precomp’s internal layers. Manual edits inside that precomp are replaced. If several outer layers share that source precomp, rebuilding it also changes the shared digit artwork.
The digit layout is sized from the values in the current keyframes. After adding keys with larger values directly in After Effects, reapply through Odo to make room for the extra digits.
Convert an existing counter
Changing Look on a selected Odo counter converts it immediately. Applying Roll to an ordinary selected text layer replaces it with a precomp layer using its text style. Returning to Switch replaces the roll with a text layer.
Conversions keep the count key times, layer in and out points, parent, label color, and visual center. Static scale and rotation are copied. The replacement receives a generated name. Animated transforms, other effects, and other layer properties are not copied, so make the look choice before building those details.
When converting back to text, Odo removes the old roll precomp if nothing else uses it.
Keep the roll connected
Rolling digits refer to the outer comp and counter layer by name. If renaming either breaks the roll, select its outer layer and click Apply roll to rebuild the references. Keep the outer comp and counter layer names unique so those references resolve to the intended layer.
