Make Position move first
- Animate the layer’s Position with at least two keys, or give Position an expression that creates motion.
- Select the layer. You can also select a property on it. Squash always targets that layer’s Scale.
- Choose Squash, then click Apply Squash or Apply.
- Preview where the layer moves fastest, then adjust Strength.
Position isn’t moving means Springy found neither two Position keys nor a Position expression. Adding Scale keys alone does not meet this requirement.
The stretch increases with Position speed and returns to the base Scale when the layer stops. Existing Scale values and keys remain the base for the result.
Use Direction to choose Follow or Vertical.
Choose the stretch direction
Follow weighs horizontal and vertical speed. Horizontal travel stretches X and compresses Y. Vertical travel stretches Y and compresses X. Equal horizontal and vertical speed produces no stretch. It changes the X/Y proportions without rotating the layer to align it with the path.
Vertical always stretches Y and compresses X while the layer moves, regardless of its travel direction.
Squash keeps the product of X and Y scale unchanged. On a 3D layer, Z scale stays unchanged. Only X/Y Position speed drives the stretch, so travel purely in Z produces none.
Combine it with another behavior
Apply Wiggle or Overshoot to Position, then apply Squash to the layer. They can coexist because they occupy different properties. Their control groups remain separate.
If Scale already has another expression, Springy skips it unless Replace Other Expressions is on. If the result is still unchanged, check for actual X/Y movement, Strength above zero, and the diagonal-motion limit of Follow.
