I cannot find Tidy in the module picker
Check whether Tidy is already in the current layout. A layout only offers another copy when a tool supports multiple copies; Tidy does not. Use its existing slot, or remove that slot before adding it elsewhere.
The actions are dim and the counts show dashes
Click Scan first. Changing scope clears the previous report. Once scanned, a checkmark and an inactive action mean that category has no counted findings. You can still open its list, including kept comps under Unused.
No open project means After Effects has no project available. Open or create a project and scan again. A composition does not need to be open.
Tidy says the project or folder is empty
The project is empty, or a message such as Assets is empty, means the scan found no project items inside that scope. Import footage or add a comp, or return to Project and rescan.
Tidy asks me to select a folder
For Select a folder in the Project panel, select a folder there and click the scope control again. A timeline layer selection does not set a folder scope.
The scope folder is gone means the chosen folder was deleted or is absent in the current project. Tidy resets to Project. Choose a new scope if needed, then scan.
Tidy all does nothing or leaves findings behind
Already tidy means every counted category is clear. Nothing checked to tidy means none of the included categories can run from this report. Check the left icons and, for Missing, enter a search folder first.
Fonts and Naming need manual repairs. Kept comps, protected items, and skipped duplicates may also remain. Nothing to tidy or a temporary 0 badge means the action changed no eligible items. Rescan if the project or settings changed after your last scan.
Unsorted does not move something I expected
Open Unsorted to see the planned destination. Check the current scope, the protected folder, and Sort inside your folders. By default, Tidy preserves your custom folders. See sorting rules.
An unused comp stays in the list
Comp · kept is intentional. Follow removing unused items if you want comp removal. Render-queued comps and data footage have additional keep rules.
After removing comps, rescan for sources that have just become unused. One removal pass does not repeatedly clear new unused dependencies.
Alt-click does not remove my unused comps
When the only unused items are kept comps, the Unused count is a checkmark and its wand is disabled. Turn on Remove unused comps, close the list, rescan, and reopen Unused. Alt-click is only available when the wand is already active.
A duplicate is skipped because a layer is locked
Skipped N locked layers, or a result ending in N skipped (locked), means at least one locked layer blocked a duplicate merge. Unlock those layers or enable Merge into locked layers, then rescan and retry. The whole affected duplicate is kept until its references can be replaced.
Relinking finds no files
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| Pick a folder to search | Enter a path or use the folder chooser in Missing. |
| Folder not found | Check the path and reconnect the drive if needed. |
| Can’t read that folder | Choose a readable folder or correct its permissions. |
| No matches · N still missing | Choose a closer search folder and check the stored filenames. |
| Relinked N items · N not found | The matches were repaired. The remaining items need another folder or manual relinking. |
| Nothing is missing | Rescan if the open list looks out of date. |
Search limits and skipped unreadable subfolders can leave files unmatched without a separate warning. Use a smaller folder. If the wrong file was linked, undo immediately, then search a folder containing only the intended match. See relink matching.
A listed item, comp, or layer is gone
Those items are gone, That comp is gone, That layer is gone, or Nothing to select mean a stored result no longer gives Tidy a valid selection. Rescan after changing the project. This also helps after moving or deleting text layers before using Fonts.
The counts do not change after an edit or undo
Click the health ring to rescan. Only Tidy’s own cleanup actions refresh the report automatically. Crossed-out list entries are retained for context until you close and reopen the list.
Tidy reports a verification limit or an unexpected error
A verify suite limits Tidy to its fixture folder is a development safeguard. Finish or stop the verification session before cleaning another scope.
For Tidy could not finish or another unexpected host error, rescan and inspect the project before retrying. Use After Effects’ undo history if an action made changes before failing.
